“The most meaningful way to succeed is to help others succeed.”
How does GHJ help you #BeMore?
As a single, working mom, I value the #BeMore mindset because I am able to be there for my daughter. I recharge by being in nature, and I appreciate being able to truly disconnect and reset when I need to — I know my team can cover for me so I can relax.
What issues in the community do you care most about, and how does it motivate you?
While on GHJ Foundation’s Grants Committee, I was able to advocate for a nonprofit that supports victims of domestic violence. It is a cause very close to me as I was in an abusive marriage for years and was able to leave because of the support of my family and friends. Not everyone is as fortunate, so organizations that help to not only support people getting out of those situations but also educate to keep people safe are close to my heart.
What is your favorite quote that best describes your professional philosophy?
I really like Adam Grant, the organizational psychologist and professor. I have two that I really like from him: “The most meaningful way to succeed is to help others succeed” and “Excellence is the product of high aspirations and low ego.” I like both of these quotes because they reflect my philosophy that succeeding is not a solo event — it takes working and building relationships with others. That is such a huge part of my role. Without others and building trust within the organization, there is no way we could succeed.
What makes you get up in the morning, and how does it impact your work style?
Everything I do and focus on is to create a better employee experience. Some of the things I work on are long-term and others are quick but the goal of everything is to make the employee experience a better one, from payroll processing to learning and development and engagement. I love having an internal focus because if I can focus internally, it makes it easier for employees to focus externally.
What is your proudest professional moment, and why?
At a previous company, I had to manage the reduction in force program. This meant, every month, I managed reducing the headcount across the company. This was one of the hardest roles I have ever had as every termination impacts someone’s life and livelihood. But I am proud I was able to create a program that supported employees going through this challenge by standardizing severance, providing longer notification times, outsourcing services and providing career advisor counseling. While I could not change the business decision or the ultimate outcome for the individuals, I could make sure they had the tools and support to make the transition easier.
